Breeding Profile by David Brasch

If you have a Fernando Bale bitch, then Power And Glory is perfect for her...
We’ve said it all before, but some greyhounds have the very best names.
Try the superstar race bitch Wow She’s Fast the winner of 20 races, $2.5 million, multiple Group 1 winner and twice victor in The Phoenix.
So, when Sydneysider Jeff Eastburn tempted fate a couple of years ago by naming his blue pup by Hooked On Scotch-Kwong Magic with just such a name, POWER AND GLORY certainly had much to live up to.
And, wow, didn’t he do just that!
Try a career of 36 starts for 18 wins and 11 placings and stakes earnings of $1.4 million for owner Jeff and his trainer Ken Burnett.
The GLORY of his race career came in his ultimate performances.
Along the way he ran a track record at Bulli, won the Million Dollar Chase in an absolutely awesome display, and the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg in which he was just as impressive.
He was placed the year before in the MDC Consolation and other prestige placings included the Gosford Goldmine, the Robert Smith Maiden as a pup, and the G3 New Sensation. He was also a finalist in the G1 Dapto Megastar and G3 Temora Cup.
The POWER of Power And Glory is the times he could run wherever he went. Try Wentworth Park where success came SEVEN times under 29.33, the fastest being 29.15.
Try Bulli where he went 25.79 (1/100th outside the Track Record) and then lowered it to 25.76. Previous Track Record holders at Bulli over the 472m included a couple of Stud Dogs you may have heard of...Aston Dee Bee and Barcia Bale.
What about Dapto where he ran 29.49, or Gosford with a 29.12, and Temora with 25.42.
BUT, and it is a huge but, everyone in NSW was well aware of the absolute speed of Power And Glory with the Blue flyer clocking an amazing 23.38 in a Post-to-Post gallop at Wentworth Park.
Power And Glory was bred to be a Million Dollar Chase dog. His pedigree carries that Hooked On Scotch/Fabregas cross that was already found in the pedigree of MDC placegetter, Postman Pat.
It is a strong degree of line breeding - 3x3 to the similarly bred Misty Fields and Fabregas, that will certainly stand Power And Glory in good stead now that he has retired to stud.
Power And Glory’s dam, the speedy Kwong Magic (El Grand Senor-Princess Aria by Fabregas), was a multiple winner and her litter by Hooked On Scotch is 100 percent successful. It also contains MDC Maiden finalist Cunningham.
It is a direct damline that traces to classy gallopers like Little Receiver and her dam, that star race bitch Wild Receiver (2nd G2 Nat Distance, G2 Ladies Bracelet, fourth in the G1 Sandown Laurels, finalist in the G2 WA All Stars, G3 WPK Gold Cup and G3 Vince Curry Maiden).
It even goes much further back to Maturity winner Warranwood Girl.
Broodbitch owners have been sweating on Power And Glory being retired to Stud and why wouldn’t they?
His record breaking speed, his obvious racetrack determination, and the Million Dollar Chase and Group 1 Easter Egg victories have put him into the spotlight more than others who have tread the Stud path. So, what will suit Power And Glory at Stud?
So, what will suit Power And Glory at Stud?
It has been said before, but in Power And Glory’s case, it is more apt that most.
If Power And Glory never mated any bitches other than those sired by Fernando Bale, it would not matter.
Fernando Bale, the ultimate in stud dog success, the sire of the winners of $123 million, the winner of eight Group 1s, has done it all. His legacy is ever lasting.
Putting Fernando Bale bitches to Power And Glory will continue that legacy. That’s because EVERYTHING about the pedigree of Power And Glory has already worked with Fernando Bale.
If something isn’t broken, then why try to fix it!
Hooked On Scotch’s dam Nicki Fields was mated to Fernando Bale to produce superstars Poke The Bear and Out Of Range.
Daughters of Fernando Bale to Hooked On Scotch have produced Group performers Black Silencer, Harmony Fire, Gold Scotch, She’s That Girl, Smart And Classy, Lone Rooster, Carton Of Bear, Fire Lighter, Master Pablo, Junk Yard Clyde etc.
Fernando Bale has worked exceptionally when linked with Fabregas (sire of Power And Glory’s 2nd dam).
Examples of this include NZ G1 champ Opawa Superstar and his brother Opawa Hugo, but the G1 class Launch Code, Deliver, Fernando Cazz, Fernando Bluey, Slingshot Gypsy etc.
The G1 star Drill Sergeant is by a son of Fernando Bale from a daughter of Fabregas.
Power And Glory’s damsire is El Grand Senor and he too has a fabulous “nick” with Fernando Bale.
There are numerous examples of this cross working as well.
It would be pretty obvious by now that daughters of Fernando Bale, and there are thousands, are the perfect recipe for Power And Glory’s stud success.
But, there is much more to Power And Glory’s study career than only Fernando Bale matings.
Bernardo daughters too will be ideal. Power And Glory’s immediate damline has produced the classy Savanna Beach (13 wins, $62,000), Swift Beach (10 wins, $50,000), Airborne Beach (11 wins, $32,000), Bernardo Beach (8 wins, $29,000) etc.
And, it should be remembered, when Bernardo mated a bitch carrying El Grand Senor up close, the result was superstar Explicit. El Grand Senor is renowned for the pace and chase he imparts into bloodlines.
The Fernando Bale influence via sons like Tommy Shelby, and the virtual brothers My Redeemer and Koblenz, will also suit matings to Power And Glory. The latter two will bring in duplications of the famed Floodgate family and this is a proven recipe with My Redeemer.
Because Barcia Bale is the grandsire of Power And Glory, and his dam is intensely in-bred to Where’s Pedro, more Barcia Bale (ideally through bitches that carry him through a daughter) will suit as well.
Duplicating Barcia Bale is being found in more and more Group performers throughout the country.
With Fabregas so strong in Power And Glory’s pedigree, he will also strongly suit bitches by Hard Style Rico...the G1 Melbourne Cup winner and Sandown TR breaker, has worked exceptionally with Fabregas.
That’s because it brings in the littermates Witch Magic and Path To Power.
Hard Style Rico’s two best progeny, The Phoenix winner Schillaci, and top sprinter Ducati Roy, are out of daughters of Fabregas.
Fabregas, too, has worked exceptionally with Bernardo, G1 Hobart 1000 winner Aussie Secret the best.
Another reason why Bernardo bitches will suit Power And Glory.
The duplication of Larkhill Jo in Power And Glory also suits for matings to Jarvis Bale and Allen Deed females, who carry Larkhill Jo’s famous half-brother Sonic Flight.
G1 Melbourne Cup winner Yachi Bale is bred on this famous cross that is also found in six recent winners of the G1 English Derby.
Hooked On Scotch is a fine stud dog. His pedigree, too, has strong influences that continue to dominate. G1 Topgun Stayers winner Without A Trace is by Houdini Boy from this family.
It is saturated with Knocka Norris and the Portrait family.
This makes bitches with Aston Dee Bee in their make-up superb for Power And Glory. Hooked On Scotch is bred identically to Aston Dee Bee and his litter sister Aston Miley who just happens to be the mother of Aston Rupee. More recipes to try with Power And Glory.
The strength of the Portrait family in Hooked On Scotch also allows for bitches with Shima Shine in their pedigree to be linked with Power And Glory.
The fact Power And Glory has a strong degree of line breeding also means he can be used in a bid to get him to dominate the brood bitches he mates.
This means bitches with a degree of outcross can also be successfully mated to him, relying on his bloodline domination to do just that to the mating.
They say…what’s in a name? In Power And Glory’s case, it is nothing but success.
